Would you say that new extensions are worth buying?

I have heard that extensions outside of the .com or .net and .org area are not as good for SEO, is there any truth to this?

They do seem very practical and they open up a world of posibilities that have more SEO power. I guess time will tell.

New extensions no......existing and established extensions......maybe. I don't see Google changing things around to where the unproven can have more value than the proven.

Established extensions are valuable to purchase since they will stop competitors and scam artists from stealing your domain and any valuable marketing that you have invested in. Many black hat SEO companies could use the information to smear your website in the event they can get the negative website to rank well.

I am not sure about that either even though people say it all the time. But I do think that people always think about .com when trying to remember a website, so it's more practical in my opinion.

So according to the link Jeff passed. At first, the .COM beat out a new gTLD domain name when it came to quality traffic: but .COM traffic was more expensive in exchange. However, that changed one year and four months later.

Back in May 2014, They found that domains of new extensions were converting at about 34 percent, and .COMs were converting at about 52 percent. Therefore It cost more to advertise using a .COM than a new domain extension. However, over a year and a half later, new domain extensions are converting at about the same rate. And .COM domains are converting now at nearly 20 percent. Still costs more to advertise using a .COM domain name than usig other though.

Probably the .COM stale expensive cost caused this sudden shift and increased convertion rate.

I am really not sure about that, why would those new extensions make a difference in what SEO is concerned? .com is more expensive as you mention.

Most new gtlds (extensions) will not be around or would have sold less than 5000 domains. The success is so dependant on individual registries and even if the extension makes sense, its not about SEO. Many will be consolidated by registries. This is all new and if you want long terms success, go with established extensions like cctlds (major countries) and .com.

Just my opinion after going though many extensions over the years - .mobi, .ws, .jobs (mostly dead)

Yep, pretty much, we need to wait and see if it will have success, it's not just because they exist that they are worth buying.

That makes sense. After all, it's been the most popular domains for years (and still is, I assume). I agree with @Delilah about the name being easy to remember. That said, I've also seen websites using less popular domain extensions become big and active, so I don't think that's an excuse. Proper marketing and patience are keys to good SEO, I believe.

The people who are in this for the long haul....the lifers in the game, will find worth in new extensions. They get down to the technical details and they find worth where others don't.

I don't think extensions mean anything with ranking - for the most part. However, though, certain national extensions are known to hurt people in certain situations. For instance, someone with a .co,uk website might have a tough time ranking in the US. Nonetheless, though, some national extensions, like .io, now behave like general extensions.
