Traffic ccTLDs Doesn't Include India?

Rick Latona announced the focus and schedule for the upcoming TRAFFIC ccTLDs in Milan in April. Unfortunately, there is nothing about .in or .co.in :(

There will be seminars about domains in the following countries:
Colombia
Italy
Sweden
Norway
Denmark
Finland
France
The United Kingdom
Spain
Germany
Switzerland
Austria
Poland
Russia

I left a comment on Rick's blog about India, but so far it hasn't been approved.

I attended last year's TRAFFIC ccTLDs conference, and I noticed a general feeling among the participants that "ccTLDs" meant "European ccTLDs" and a feeling that Indian domains were too exotic. So, I guess Rick is just formalizing what was pretty much the case already. Understandable, but disappointing.

Sad to see from such a prominent domainer. No sign of .cn (China) either?

Biased I know but the potential of the domain market in India has to be bigger than any of those euro countries. The per capita income and lack of knowledge of the value of domains in India seems to be the major hurdle.

While on one hand the sentiments expressed here should be respected (which I am sure a vast majority in this forum would), on the other hand, I thought the great names behind TRAFFIC ccTLDs know best about when the timing would be just right.

Looking at the sheer potential, nature and size of markets that .IN and .CN cater to, timing could well be very critical!

May be a day or two will be exclusively dedicated for .IN and .CN in one of the TRAFFIC ccTLDs to be held not in a distant future. :)

I cannot speak about .CN , but I think .IN is going the .INFO route. I was reading slashdot about malware, and one of the site mentioned was uqwaaa.in (DO NOT VISIT IT). This domain was registered on 4th Feb of this year. If this keeps on happening because of cheap registrations then the reputation of .in will be tarnished.

i understand your worries/fears about .in vis-a-vis cheap promotional pricing, but the inregistry has confirmed that it will end this september...thats only a few months away, and we will soon get to a point where some will not remember when the last promo pricing happened. COntrary to what some people think, i actually like the promo pricing-as long as it doesn't last forever. .in is witnessing about 12K registrations/month without hte promo pricing, but experiences 30K regs/month with the promo pricing, so IMO, its still worth a few bad eggs(like uqwaaa.in) to have .in attain more volume. What about people who register .ins durign the promo price and build a website on it but then pay normal renewal price the next year? Also, judging from the fear many .in domainers have regarding registering adult .ins, one can draw the conclusion that India will continue to effectively monitor the .in space going forward.

It is really unfortunate that .IN registry is going .INFO and .CN way and ultimately same will effect our portfolio, My trust in .IN registry is completly shaken because same is also manage by Afilias (.Info registry operators).

.In registry extended the promo till 30th Sept, 2010 ? but did you notice how many registrars participating in it and giving the promo price to end customer ? I have got insider news that majority of .IN registrar bycotted the extended promo they are against the heavly discounted uneven pricing.

Today almost 60% of .INFO registration are with Godaddy.com and similar things are happening in .IN registry and it is well known fact that more then 68% of .INFO is used in spam (See this Link) and today all you know How much your .INFO domain is worth ?

I talked personally to three .In domain registrar and majority of .IN registrar feels that low cost attracts spammers and all short of bad and abusive registrations and ultimately if .IN registry loose the reputation then you will also make heavy loss on your portfolio just like people did in past with .info.

.In registry promo now is running for almost one and half year and they still says it is promotion ? If you run promo for a such long period of time and you claim your registration is increasing then this is not the right strength of .In registry.

We should also boycott .In promotion as it is going to have bad effect on our portfolio ?

I think the comments on .in going the way of .info is overblown. (.info for most part does not stand for anything - brand value is poor) . I am not opposed to the promotions, in fact they should be reducing the registration/renewal prices on a permanent basis.

The key in India, it still is related to access to high speed internet (or cable modem speeds), that number is somewhere in the 10 million or less (80 million number is mostly dial up or much lower speeds than cable broadband). This needs to take off to really help .in's in my opinion. The obvious competition for .in is .com's that are India related.

Lets face it, it has taken 15 years here in the US for small business to catch on to SEO or Domain Name Importance (some may argue it still is not there), so we need to be patient for .in market to develop.

Submitted 40 quite good, some premium (My opinion) various cctlds every one was rejected!

On the other hand just completed the sale of cctld that was rejected for a Latona auction but sold by Moniker/Snap for $6K so perhaps rejection is a bonus.
;)

Traffic Milan had 1 lot of 145 lll.in domains.

I saw that lot in the auction. Unfortunately, it didn't sell. I think bulk lots are pretty difficult to sell, as buyers will always like some, but not necessarily all, of the domains offered.

To add to what Jeff mentioned, considering that the renewal is ~$14.00 per name, the whole list would have cost ~$2K to renew. Also the reserve was $5K. I think one would think 1 or two quality names at that price.

Overall it would seem that the Milan cctld was yet another damp squib. The .eu "special" well, -was not!

The ccltd's was only saved by a few .com sales that may well have been pre-bidded, something we have seen before.

I believe there is a cctld auction etc in HK later this year. Better get my .cn's .tw's, .hk's in now. ;)

Good luck Rick, I am sure it will all come together in the future.
