Identifying a domain owner

I am looking for the simplest way of knowing the identity of a domain owner. I know there are numerous sites online, most of which, are copycats of the legit ones. Again, are there any legal loopholes if you look for this information without the knowledge of the domain owner(s).

If you search for the domain on https://whois.net/ you can find the legal owner, and it is publicly available information so there's no problem with looking it up. Some registrars like Godaddy allow buyers to hide their details for a fee, but you can get most sites' details there,

Thanks for this; it's pretty much straightforward and easy to use. The other day, I was looking up some real estate company and realized that details about ownership weren't very clear. Should this always raise a red flag, so to speak?

Is there a valid reason for hiding who you are and what domains you own? I can't think of why a person wouldn't want others to know if he owns a domain unless it's a sinister or negative reason. Am I wrong?

My point exactly. If you own a domain, then there's nothing to hide really. I would assume that it would either be a sinister move or that the business is engaging in fraudulent transactions.

Maybe unless it's a porn site and you're a church deacon or something like that... That would be enough reason to want to hide that little fact from the world, LOL>

Sadly online harrassment means there are sometimes good reasons for it. A lot of support groups and sites for health conditions etc. hide the owners' names and personal details, or simply show it as the ISP.
