Google has won the rights to the new gTLD .APP by winning the Last Resort Auction at a whopping $25 million.
This is the highest price paid for a new gTLD until now, the second being .TECH which was bought by Radix for $6,760,000.
.APP had the largest number of new gTLD applicants of all new gTLDs.
There were 13 companies that applied to operate the new gTLD .APP.

Most of the auctions for new gTLDs end up in a private auction unlike the Last resort Auction which has taken place for only 11 new gTLDs so far.

The highest price paid in a private auction has been reported to be around $20-$25 Million.
The proceeds of private auctions are basically split amongst the other applicants or losing bidders while at the ICANN auction all the proceeds go to ICANN

You question the success of the new GTLD's but when you see monster corporations buying the rights then you have to believe they will make them a success
