I came across a list of Dataquest's Top 25 Hot Indian Web 2.0 Startups. I thought I'd check to see how many of these Indian startup companies are using Indian domain extensions. The results, as at today, are as follows:

16% are using .in
84% are using .com

With regard to the .IN sites:
- 25% forward .co.in to their .in site
- 25% forward .com to their .in site
- 50% do not also use and/or forward .com/.co.in to their .in site

With regard to the .COM sites:
29% forward .in and/or .co.in to their .com site
71% do not also use and/or forward .in/.in.co to their .com site

As many of the sites are aimed at the Indian market, I'm surprised the numbers using (or even forwarding) .in extensions isn't higher. I think it's just a matter of time before this changes.

Interesting stats - thanks!

It will change over time. I've seen it happen in Canada. Domains in Canada were opened up in 2000 and through most of the early 2000's you hardly saw a .ca. Now, after almost 9 years, it's about 1/2 .ca and 1/2 .com.

I was in the UK in the late '90s and hardly saw a .co.uk. Now, practically every company uses .co.uk.

Except for the US, end users generally support their country's cctld.

Some countries use their own cctld's more than others. Most of the time it comes down to how early/late in time their cctld was released. Many of the european countries almost exlusively use their own ccltd - de, nl, pl etc

I came across an article that provides a lists of Indian companies/websites that relate to the online food ordering business. I have no idea if these are recent start-ups or not, but I thought it would be interesting to post some stats:

Out of the 16 websites on the list:

- 37.5% have .in extension
- 62.5% have .com extension

50% of the .in websites also have the related .com domain (which either target the US or other countries).

It's great to see the .in extension being used.

Most Indian startup targets NRI's and hence prefer .com.
.co.in and .in is primarily used for localizations and for better search engine ranking.
Travel, Employment/Job are 2 popular ecommerce category in India.
Take a look at Global Travel websites.
Most of them use .co.in to target India (These were registered post 2005)

Orbitz.co.in
Expedia.co.in
Travelocity.co.in
Hotels.co.in
kayak.co.in

Similarly, Most Global Job Meta search engines use the .co.in extension to attract Indian audience. (These were registered in late 2008)
CareerJet.co.in
Indeed.co.in
SimplyHired.co.in
