I came across a good example of a US company choosing a .IN domain to help it reach users in India.

It seems that the company recently registered Ignighter.in (it currently redirects to the .com).
As for igniter.in, it was already registered in 2009 so the company wouldn't have been able to register it to protect themselves from losing possible traffic to this site (ie due to users inadvertently typing igniter.in instead of ignighter.in).
The company was becoming incredibly popular in India, where Western-style dating remains somewhat taboo. Ignighter, which organizes friends to go out in groups, solves a problem in the traditional culture. And the market there is huge: Approximately 65 percent of India's 1.1 billion people are under the age of 35.
