Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is more secure and more efficient than Windows. Linux also has more of the features web designers expect, so unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.

Windows applications which require a Windows server:
ASP.NET
MSSQL
MS Access
Visual Basic development
Remote Desktop (dedicated servers only)

One other difference is that Linux files are case-sensitive and Windows files are not.
Example:
On a Linux server, home.html and Home.html are different names.
On a Windows server, home.html, Home.html, and HOME.HTML are the same name.

when you ask an feedback on Linux & Windows mostly people leap on the page and say Linux is more secure than Windows, because most of them are not technically sound. But when someone who relate to with hosting company say this then it looks quite funny. The only difference between Linux & Windows is price, as Windows require Microsoft's genuine license. That's it. In terms of feature and performance both platform are good. [/FONT]

Linux is an open source system and is therefore more cost-effective to operate and maintain than Windows, meaning that Linux hosting will cost you less than Windows hosting. Linux also has a reputation for stability and speed which means that Linux web servers will crash less often than Windows web servers and Linux runs most processes faster than Windows.

Linux is more popular than Windows hosting. Linux supports PHP natively and most of your free softwares are PHP. One of the biggest differences between the Linux and Windows servers is security. Linux is built much more secure than Windows servers. From the offset, the root level is not available to most programs without permission. Also, it is much easier to control URL structure in Linux which is important for search engine rankings.
