By mid-2012, vernacular domain names in all 22 Indian languages may secure the approval of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). By the end of this year, the central government would approach ICANN for internationalised domain names in seven additional Indian languages. These are Sindhi, Kashmiri, Kannada, Oriya, Malayalam, Manipuri and Assamese.

Interesting!

Maybe vernacular newspapers/ local government bodies may immediately get a few of those domains...

Other than that, I do not see much potential, right away.

Someone may get the early adopter advantage and snag a few top keyword domains and a few may have a developed site on those.

Monetization and sale of those is going to be difficult. Probably looking at a 5 to 10 year window at the very least.

Just my thoughts...:)

The same trend happening globally will get repeated. With New gtlds few years back and more anticipated in 2012, .COM got MORE and MORE premium as easy recall and as it got mainstream acceptance..

Same will repeat in India. .IN and .CO.IN's will gain more prominence and more premiums with confusion on new strings
