American Entrepreneur Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook, Lyft and Spotify, is diving into the world of legalized marijuana.
Through his Founders Fund he has made an investment in Privateer Holdings who is the first private equity firm to invest solely in the legal cannabis niche.
Four states have legalized recreational marijuana, although only Colorado and Washington have their sales systems up and running. Oregon and Alaska are developing their sales systems, and voters in the District of Columbia in November approved the legalization of marijuana but haven't yet created a system to tax and sell it. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia, along with Canada, permit the use of medical marijuana.
