There is an interesting interview of Rajesh Aggarwal, the Chief Executive Office of NIXI about the introduction of IDNs in India:

What does having IDNs mean to you?
More than a billion Indians do not understand English. We are going for Indic language operating systems, applications and web content. Having URLs also in the Indian language will be a good step to include for all of these people.

Unfortunately, they don't touch on when India will actually allow IDNs and from my recent contact with NIXI, they don't have any imminent plans.

The timing of IDN.in could change quickly when the ICANN publicity starts to surround the new Russian IDN.rf (which is expected to be the first to launch) followed by the worldwide publicity that will span from the other IDN.IDN that will cue up later this year.

There is about $14,000,000 in the ICANN 2009 budget for IDN rollout and publicity, which does not included what the registrars around the world will spend.

Hi Bill - welcome to INForum!

I hope that you're right. It would certainly make more of an impact if registries all across the globe were acting at more or less the same time.

Have you invested in IDN in Hindi, Bengali or Telugu?
