.LONDON which will enter the general availability phase on September 9, 2014, is expected to have great demand on its launch.
It is predicted that by the time the domain reaches it's general availability phase, there would be more than 50,000 registrations already.

With 50,000 pre open reg estimates there will be a lot given away?

Or will all .co.uk holders suddenly find they have one in their account?

I think .LONDON is going to have a lot of buzz on its general availability. There are a lot of expectations from .london and .black.
Of course your concern about the new gtld is reasonable but i think these domains are ultimately going to have a good status.
