Musician gets LadyGaga.mobi domain name through cybersquatting dispute.


If you cybersquatted on a bunch of famous peoples’ names on .mobi domain names, would anyone care?

Apparently Lady Gaga does.

Stefani Germanotta filed a cybersquatting complaint against Nancy Faralisz of The Michigan Initiative LLC over the domain name LadyGaga.mobi.
Faralisz didn’t respond to the complaint and the panel found in Lady Gaga’s favor.

From what I've seen in the industry, squatters typically lose any legal battles and are obligated under law to relinquish the domains. The courts are gaining experience in knowing that these kind of scams exist. They typically turn out to be extortion, and the government is cracking down on these habits, resulting in a better, more open internet.

And again, cybersquatting didn't turn into a profit. Those kind of tricks only work once or just a few times during an earlier internet stage, folks.
