Well all of that has suddenly changed. Popular domain registrar Godaddy.com and its reseller sites such as Widest.com are now selling dot IN domain names.

Yes I too have noted that. Initially I used to register my .in domains with idotz.net but a few days back I noted that godaddy.com too has started registering .in domains. This is much better for me as I have most of my domains with godaddy and only few .in domains are registered with idotz.net. I will soon transfer them to godaddy.

thats precisely the reason why they started with .IN domains in the first place..
