How do they make money?

One thing I've never understood is how hosting companies make enough money to cover payroll, technology/hardware updates, cybersecurity, advertisements, and other expenses. The market appears saturated with hosting companies and most of them offer low fees. So how are they staying in business?

They make money from the "extras" like SSL's, business email accounts, VPS and Dedicated servers. Some companies make money from domain names but most do not make money from domains or shared hosting.

A lot of hosting companies have been in the game long enough to where they can offer lower prices because they have a lot of business. Think about, some people have to charge higher because they don't have a lot of business and need to capitalize on what they can.

I should have known that it was mostly about the upsell and business scalability. It also explains why there are extra features added all the time which are often sold piece by piece. Thanks for chiming in!
