Google sites not taking custom domains?

You used to be able to set up sites on Google, then point domain names at them. I just inherited a bunch of these, but the custom domains have been disconnected, and it looks like google isn't allowing custom domains through their system anymore. I've repointed the domains through the registrar so they still point at the space, but anyone else run into this problem? Is it worth keeping hosting through google, because I might just move the lot to my own host.

Isn't it better just to go with that idea and move all of your sites right now anyway? I think that it is always a good idea to have your sites under one reliable hosting plan than to spread them around and have to deal with different service providers.
