Finally, .IN Registry will launch .Bharat domain names (.भारत in Devanagari script) on 21st of August, 2014 in New Delhi.

The launch will call for the unveiling of the portal containing a few .भारत based popular domain names by Hon’ble Minister for Communications & IT by cutting the ribbon electronically through the computer mouse.

The same .भारत ccTLD is shared by other Indian languages such as Boro, Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi, Nepali and Sindhi-Devanagari, the end users can now get domain names in these languages apart from Hindi. The sunrise period for the same will commence from 15th August,2014.
This is soon to be followed in the coming months by similar launches in regional languages such as Tamil, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Telugu and Bangla etc.

Interesting. But with interest in even IDN.com waning and values tumbling hundreds of new gtlds this has to be about THE worst time to be launching.

Off topic but wot - can you tell us what is going on with IDN.com?

I think even seasoned IDNers are feeling the heat. Acceptance is still very limited, premium names that would have sold for well in to xxxxx a couple of years ago are now scrapeing in to low to medium xxxx.

Ultra premium names are dropping, Shenzhen.com (major city) in Chinese just made $10,000 at snapnames.

Others in lesser languages are dropping and being picked up for reg fee or not at all.

That said, ASCII are not doing that well either.

Tough times.

For Sunrise C - "Existing Registrant holding ASCII domain name .in" - does this exclude registrants holding ASCII **.co.in** domains?

Today I received an email about this from the Registry:

Dear Registrant,

  1. Internet is a global resource having widespread applications in the socio-economic development of the country. The local language plays a critical role in making Internet more inclusive by widening the knowledge base across communities in the native language and promoting the use of local language content. Global resource management of Internet is done by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)
  2. Until recently, the Root Zone was limited to a set of characters conforming to US-ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) or "Latin" alphabets. This changed with the introduction of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), which introduced top-level domains (TLDs) in different scripts and enabled Internet users to access domain names in their own language; for example www.भाषा.भारत. in Devanagari
  3. This feature is expected to enhance the reach and relevance of Internet for remote and far flung villages, further bridging the digital divide.
