Country flag
Today in DNJournal, it was reported that Shoppen.nl (shopping in Dutch) sold for $69,750, whereas Shoppen.com sold for $13,000. Nice to see that sometimes country code domains outdo their dot com equivalents. Hopefully, we'll see this someday in the Indian domain space as well.

My sense is that this is the way of the future - ccTLDs which inspire patriotism and trust inherent within the extension.

In Canada we are seeing a huge evolution to .CA domain names and certainly I pay more attention to them than .com names. I think seeing one's Country Code makes the product seem more unique and personalized.

Anyone care to weigh .in on India?

Cheers

I agree completely. As the internet grows larger, localization is going to grow. For instance, people want to order online from stores in their own country, read local news, find out about local entertainment, etc. The country codes are perfect for this.

Do you live in Canada? I'm in Ottawa, and also very interested in .ca domains. They have really taken off this year, with one record breaking sale after another.

I moved from Calgary to Victoria in July 2007 to pursue a better balance - so far so good!

I wish I would have invested more in generic .CA over the past 3 years but decided to concentrate on India.

Country codes do seem to have a great future over the next 2-5 years.

I started a thread on DNF a few months ago comparing .IN with .CA - some interesting responses.

Good Luck

Cool! We're actually thinking about moving out West too at some point in the future - to Vancouver.

I remember that thread well.

I do think that country codes are the way of the future, and .in and .ca are two of the best choices. I also invest in .uk domains as well and that has gone well.

I still prefer ".my" because nowadays Malaysia in become international city and the market in there is getting larger. Country code can be future of domain name if there is no war in future.

Wow, I never would have guessed that country domains would become more popular and more profitable than the .com This does make sense though, I know that if I saw two websites, one with a .com and one with my country, i would definitely go for the local one. The internet is a big wide world and it is nice to have something closer to home!

I think that with the expansion of country's and new business sourcing for cheaper and lower costs for items the cctld will be more popular, lets face it, a company lets say in india is making parts for a company in the uk will want the world to know where that product comes from.

Do you know if there are any ownership restrictions on .my domains?

Looks like Casino.my recently sold for $3,750. I can't see any other .my reported sales. Do you know whether there are many sales going on that aren't reported?

I really can't imagine the localized web pages not catching on quick. People can more easily identify with what is in their own country and culture. Stores, for instance, will find themselves able to hone in on what is popular in their own localized area, reather than trying to market to the whole world.

Nation specific domains are sometimes a bit more niche in value than the .com counterparts. Various reasons can be assigned to that. Maybe the .com domain is handled by someone who is not adept to utilize the domain of that name. and country specific TLD is handled by a more professional person. Its all about marketing.
