Although we often think of great domain names before deciding what websites to build, sometimes we think the other way around. It's hard to choose a website type which is relatively 'easy' because everything is available at internet these days. Do you prefer to join the tough battle and build the website as strong as you can, or pick a less popular niche?

It goes both ways actually. While choosing a smaller niche at first is a good idea because you don't have to face the big sharks in the market, getting into a competitive niche is also a great way to learn the ropes of the business.
I personally like to do both depending on the product that I'm planning to promote.

A big problem lies in the fact there are no less competitive niches nowadays. Therefore, your going to have to build a strong website. There seems to be no way around it.
However, at one time, there were niches and keyphrases that were easier to beat. In those days, Google and other engines were less strict.
