Checking your website for broken links

How often should a website owner do this? A website's health status is paramount and I believe that analyzing technical issues every so often is important. My question is whether checking this daily would be too much? I would guess that there would be an automated tool that would give real-time stats. Any suggestions?

That is not really such a major thing when you have a website that is continually putting up new content and building and creating new links. You can just do that once in a while.

I heard that you can actually use other popular websites' broken links to get traffic to your own website. I wonder how this is done or if it is legal.

I don't know how often one should be checking for that, but I have never done it. My site is still young, so I don't think I could possibly have that many broken links already.
