There are some misconceptions out there about new gTLDs and separating the facts from the myths is one way to gain an advantage on your competition.

1) Nobody is buying new domains
2) Nobody knows that new domains exist
3) New domains are penalized in search results rankings
4) The up-front costs of high-value new domains is prohibitive
5) The annual carrying costs of new domains are too high

Average people have no idea when you say .whatever.

2) Nobody knows that new domains exist

Spam extensions will be penalized in Google and on social media.

Yes, it is.

Check forums and you will already see lots of complaints about new domain renewal pricing.

5) The annual carrying costs of new domains are too high
 
It's human nature to stick with what you already know. That's why the original product is usually more popular than the offshoots and copies that come later. That's why Microsoft sells its operating system and word processing software so cheaply to schools. Get the kids trained on the products early and they'll stay loyal to the brand. The only way for a competitor to break through this consumer mindset is to offer a superior product that can't be easily duplicated. The gTLD industry obviously failed to do that. And really, they should have been able to look around and see that .com is king and sells better than .org, .net, and .info which have all been around for ages. It's not like there wasn't an example.
