how do i know which domains are taken?

I'm interested in making domain names, but how can I know which domains are already taken? I don't want to have my heart set on making a domain name only to find it's taken!

The Whois search didn't work for me too well.

Maybe you can try this: Domain Search

This worked for me very well!

I have heard about the whois database for seeing who a name is taken by, but this does not solve the issue if the name is already taken. I would suggest that you decide on three or four different domain names and then check and if the first one is available then great if not you are not setting your heart on something.
