A speculation wave

I once read somewhere that there was a speculation wave that saw acquisition of the .xyz and .top domains. It is common to see speculation leading to increased interest but in this case, after a few months, there were massive de-registrations. On the other hand, .com registrations keep losing millions of domains so I was just wondering, which is the way to go?

Where did you hear that .com was losing millions of domains? VeriSign reports indicate that .net is losing registrations but the .coms are up year over year.

Maybe Marsh means that the original owner isn't registering the domain again and again, each time it's due? I'm not positive about that and I can't find anything via professor google. The .io extension rode the wave for a while too.

Actually by deregistration, I meant those whose owners choose not to renew. Does this still refer to the same thing? What I also wanted to understand is whether or not speculation can lead to acquisition of certain domain extensions then people lose interest afterwards?

I am sure there were a lot of deregistrations for the year but overall with new registrations there has been an increase in the .com registrations of .8 percent. .net registrations have fallen. Verisign is going to try and turn that around by placing .net's on sale. Odd since they just raised the price not too long ago but that is what happens when you price is too high.

I think that speculation certainly does lead to acquisitions. Then when those acquisitions fail to generate income, interest is lost and domains not renewed. There are several extensions that I originally invested heavily in then let most of the names expire without renewal because of lack of interest. In my opinion, the .com names that expire are either businesses that no longer exist or just plain bad investment decisions by speculators and should have never been registered in the first place. I am a member of a couple of other forums and if you look at their "reg of the day" and the "domains for sale" threads, you wonder "what were they thinking when they registered that name to being with"?

No other extension is even close although I am expecting .in to close the gap some.
