Either free or paid, what is the source of themes that you mainly use on your websites? Or are you designing them yourself?

I always buy themes at this point. It's just simply the most efficient choice for me...other people can do what takes me 5 in 1, it's just smarter to buy if you're already earning, plain and simple.

If you pay money for a theme that doesn’t mean it’s going to be unique to you.
Particularly, if you buy best-selling themes you may find many sites using the same designs as you!

Before I used to play around with all kinds of themes, until I came upon Suffusion. It's very easy to customize. Then I went off the scene for a couple of years. When I came back to Wordpress, I couldn't find Suffusion anymore. For some strange reasons, it is no longer in the WP directory of themes. So I just used the simplest theme available. I am now learning HTML, CSS, and Javascript, so I should be able to make my own customizations soon.

I have never use paid themes for myself, I do what @Aree Wongwanlee does, I choose a simple theme and then customize it. It takes time but I usually enjoy the process.

What I want is to learn how to create my own themes from scratch so I can design unique themes and maybe start selling them too.

It's not too difficult to create a theme from scratch. First, you need to know HTML. You can learn the basics in less than a week. Then you need to learn CSS. You can also learn the basics in less than a week. Actually, you can learn HTML and CSS at the same time because they overlap. Once you have understood the basics, you go on to learning Javascript. There are many free resources on the Web to help you learn how to design your own theme.

That is true, and just because it is costing you does not necessarily mean that it is fit just to your liking. The degree to which you can get that really depends on a lot of things, and usually the price is involved, just like everything else. I have found some good free options though, so they are out there.

What you must keep in mind is that every theme is customizable. That means you can take just about any theme, free or paid, and change it to your own particular requirements. The easiest way to do this is to pay someone to do it. The other way to do it is to learn about HTML and CSS, With just one week's concentrated study, you should know enough to start tweaking your theme. Create a test site. Load a theme. Go under the hood. Tweak it. Look at the results. Tweak it again. Keep doing it until you are satisfied. Then upload the tweaked theme to your main site. Tada! Now you have your own theme.

One of my website uses the Genesis framework theme and another one uses Divi theme. Both are good platforms. And I am working on those sites. So they are relatively easy to use. There is also thrive framework which is good. But I don't have much experience with that. So no idea how to use and work with it. I may use it on some clients website in future.

I have a lot of forums and when I need a free theme I normally use Brivium.com. However, I also have one paid one from them, an odd one called Yttrium. Finally, another one of my themes is Metro from PixelGoose, available on Envato Market.
