I think if you have faith enough in your traffic's amount and demand for a product then you'd be confident to do affiliate marketing. Note, you need more confidence because the buyers have to buy the product rather than just click on the ad. Therefore, a lot of research needs to be done on the source of the traffic.

Your traffic decides which type of ad is good for you. For example, Youtube has mostly the CPM ads which is because they make money on per view basis. And in case of less traffic, you'd benefit from the affiliate links and CPC ads. You'd make more money if people remove adblocker. And that should be your focus too. Make money from people who watch ads.

You do not have to worry about when and how to know which of CPC ads or affiliate is performing at one time or the other. You just must focus on building traffic towards your website or blog in as much as you have up to three AD units and a maximum of three affiliate units across each of the entire pages of your website or blog.
