Can website crashes be avoided?

Facebook suffers crashes, once in a while. I remember a time when I couldn't access the site for about two hours. I know at times these result from a problem with the code and/or server. Nonetheless, can problems resulting from human error be avoided, say a lapse in judgement?

I wish I knew more about the reasons why a particular website might crash. Does it sometimes have anything to do with too many people being logged on at the same time?

It is possible that your server can become overloaded from too many people logging in at the same time. I don't know if I have the terminology right but things like that do happen sometimes.

Even the big sites crash sometimes, and it's not always the site's fault. If you get too many people logging on servers lag, go slow, and crash. Its like news sites during large events when everyone's trying to find out what's going on.

There was this website that used to manage sometime back. It was an online retailer and once in a while, it would suffer crashes as a result of many people logging in. The problem lasted for a while until the servers were migrated. In my opinion, it is okay if these crashes aren't so rampant in since they cannot be avoided altogether.

This is called a DDOS attack if it's done on purpose. As in a hacker(s) simulating massive activity that would cause a server to crash.

If it isn't done on purpose......well....that's a problem many of us wish we could have.

From a business point of view, crashes are such a huge inconvenience. If you are in competition, it is best to ensure that such instances are minimised.

Is too many people logging on to your site the only reason that a website server might crash or are there other reasons? Because if so then I don't have to worry about that ever happening to me with the little traffic I'm getting each day :D

I know what you mean. I would certainly love to be dealing with problems of having too many people on my site at one time crashing my servers. It's better than dealing with too few people on your site.

There are many things that cause a website to crash, and the servers getting overwhelmed through a lot of traffic is one of them. Of course most servers are able to handle this but in some instances, crashes are bound to happen.
