What is the best (and by that I mean cheapest) traffic source for collecting leads? Does it differ according to what niche you're in or is it all the same?

It depends on what type of leads you are trying to collect and which demographic you are after. Facebook and Google will get general traffic, but converting traffic to leads (clicks and emails) is up to your site. For leads, you'd need to go where your customers are, and bring them to you, and that normally means niche-specific marketing.

Like e-mail marketing for example. You can't get any cheaper than free. (If you do it yourself). It's like fishing, really. Sooner or later you're going to catch something.

Niche specific marketing would involve PPC with Google and Bing. However, that method is massively expensive. Nonetheless, as a 2nd alternative, you could look into banner, signature, blog post, and social media ads. However, that traffic would need to be warmed up over time to get it into a buying mode. In other words, they will need to be put on an email list or become followers to a Facebook page etc..

Social media seems to be the good source of traffic. I'd say it can even make it easier for you to acquire leads for product. I can't say if the social media can help with sales. But building list is lot easier with sponsored content on FBAds. I think many people have started with that route and that is definitely helping them along the way.

To really get enough traffic for building your email lists, a great source of traffic is the social media. There are many of them, but the most promising ones in terms of search engine optimization are Google+, Facebook, and Twitter. Learn how to create Facebook pages and advertise using the Facebook Ads.

Google+ too is equally great when it comes to generating instant traffic. It's only having a free Gmail account that is required. Twitter cannot be neglected because it guarantees traffic like Facebook, and Google+.
