Multiple Extensions

Are there any websites out there that have multiple extensions? Like Water.org, Water.com and Water.io that all lead to the same website? Is something like this even possible?

Yes, from what I've read, it is possible and it's even recommended especially for those big brands out there. I guess you wouldn't want to find yourself in competition with someone else with your name, just a different extension.

The reason I asked was because I thought that once you had a specific site name, it could not be used by someone else regardless of the extension.

I guess that's something that I have to do a little bit of research about. I just assumed that you could buy all the different extensions. I suppose it makes sense to have one name for all extensions.

No, when you buy a domain name with an extension you (usually) only buy that extension. If you want the same name with a different extension you need to buy each of those names seperately. Repointing multiple domains to point at the same site is easy, but you'll need a cannonical link or other way to avoid search engines regarding them as the different sites with duplicate content and penalising the site accordingly.

I have seen this happened several times with big websites. Sometimes they even buy and redirect domains with slightly off names in various extensions, only to redirect it to the main domain. Competition is really fierce when the group is growing big because you can guess that some smaller groups may want to join the ride illegally. It's a marketing strategy that sounds expensive, but worth doing if you can afford it.
