Well, PPC for one brings immediate results without you having to spend time with social gathering. Of course you shouldn't pick just one or the other, but PPC will bring in results from day one, whereas even the most successful social campaign will take few days to rake in anything.
It's really the combination of all the methods that one needs to really succeed in internet marketing.
I started IM 7~8 years ago with a sub to PPC coach. I would say PPC is great and all, but the problem is that I am developing a unique, self-branded (as in I am in the spotlight the whole time) system of lessons/material/video/other content.
In markets where you have are forced to compete, the price of getting a real visitor is an obscure, unknown value. I can imagine if my sales were just sent through to a landing page the way I used to do...but the value of a customer to me is a long-term follower that could be worth $5-50 a month for me. Trying to fish for $.25-1 per click in high competition isn't worth it, and the obscure longtails are waaaaay less likely to give me anything solid to run with. I guess my perspective is a bit skewed, but I also have never had a straight $10,000 investment to work with - if I did, I'd probably give PPC a real shot. Until then, I have an adventurer's personality and can't reliably deal with ppc because I end up gambling on keywords and then woooah where'd that $250 go (` - `)??
