We're back!

IT.com
We've been hacked a third time!

We lost about 13 1/2 hours of posts :(

I am worried about your web hosting. There are hosts which provide CDP or Continuous Data Protection and that's a part of their hosting packages without additional fee. And it does not mean they cost a fortune. $40 per year (shared hosting) .PM me if you want to get such hosting.

This attack is obviously very targetted. We've upset someone - perhaps in the drop catching thread. I figure if you can program a good catching script, you probably know enough to hack a website.

Somehow I tend to disagree on that. I know a very little about PHP and can say that it's fairly easy to program a catching script.A simple one may have even less than 50 lines. Hacking is a much more bigger field and one needs to be a master in Linux and networking in order to crack a website.

Anyhow, I've made a number of changes to the forum. I know that there are a number of rough edges that need to be fixed still, but at this point I'm primarily concentrating on security.
Somehow I don't like VB anymore!

....We've upset someone - perhaps in the drop catching thread....
I completly agree.. Someone is very upset...

....I figure if you can program a good catching script, you probably know enough to hack a website....
I could not disagree more with above statement.. General Drop Catching Scripts are less than 300 lines, and the one based on resellerclub APIs are even smaller.. But hacking a website?? For the sake of security testing, I have tried many times to give wrong input or wrong data entry to my scripts from a user-end, and in no way I could see my PHP code or even make the server crash.. Hacking is a mix of lot of knowledge of Unix systems, of the forum platforms used, of the particular server to host forum.. and the most important evil intent.. none of which is required in making drop-catch script..

Drop catching script and hacking is like learning how to drive a car and winning or coming closer to win in formula one race.. (not that I am saying is hacking is good as winning in F1 ..)

But one thing is for sure.. The attacks are targeted specially for Inforum and not some random attacks.

BTW, The current VB Bulletin theme looks so generic.. Even there is no logo of Inforum at top-left.. I know it is a work in progress.. But just saying.. And the colors are also too over-used by many websites.. This theme/color-scheme is like twenty-ten theme of a freshly installed Wordpress..

The old orange/black color scheme was nice and Inforum will again feel like home if it adopts that color again.. Or atleast add that style in the bottom-right dropdown menu.. But after fixing all the security things..

V bulletin is never a secured platform. There are few underground private exploits which are not known to even vbulletin core developers. I have 7 licenses for vbulletin as i run different forums. In last 2 years i got hacked many times with those exploits and finally i lost interest on vbulletin. Jeff if you need any help contact me.

Interesting, I thought vbulletin was supposed to be the best. Thanks for your offer to help!

I hadn't heard of that service before. I'm looking into it - thanks.

I'm not a programmer so thanks for the explanation. I had thought catching scripts were fairily sophisticated.

Glad to see you finally upgraded to the latest version. Hopefully it won't happen again!

That was due to your suggestion - thanks!

As to the design, we need to get a new one made, so that will take a bit of time. I agree that right now the forum looks a bit uninspiring!

Some of the plugins (e.g. itrader, post thanks) are temporarily turned off for testing purposes and will be re-added again soon.

Thanks to you for promptly taking action in order to give us the forum back.

Yes, I agree that the forum without its theme looks nothing like INF.

This skin is a HUGE improvement over the previous one.

Guess the software would have been updated too.

So something positive comes out of the hack attempt, so all good!

My programmer knows how to - and WILL now

I am just preparing payment, I have 1/3rd what he needs to start .... Securing the other 2/3rds as we speak

P.S. Jeff I promised you a copy of the scanner a while ago - when you get a chance PM me and I will get that to you. It now includes drop date of every domain in drop status ! ;)

Good to know Inforum is back with the default Vbulletin style. I like this style.
May be this time you should use FB Connect for login. But you should first consider Security.

The logo is still default vBulletin logo. I think you may not have much time to update this one.
If you need one logo I can provide you. (It would be my small support to Inforum, if you accept).

You didn't like the last one?

Well, then I guess the good news is that it is not available for VB4.

What do people like / dislike in a vb skin? We'll be getting a fresh one soon.

Please Update mobile version .. This theme is nt work well in Mobile Phone..

Thanks for letting me know. We'll be getting a new skin soon.

I like this style.

Second vote for this skin - I'll keep that in mind.

I'll set this up.

Thanks for your kind offer! Once we get the new skin, I'll see how well the old logo goes with it and we can take it from there.

Jeff,
Jsut wanted to say - Well done once again!!
I will keep a watch on new enhancements, themes and more features. .. :)

Actually, I liked the old one better. This one, the "Skin" as you call it is a bit too staid. The orange coloured theme was a bit more refreshing and a stand out from the regular run in the mill forums.

I guess the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Great work Jeff, on getting the forum back up and running.
