Rebranding .IN?

There are very few .in names that could not be used basically anywhere on the internet. Very versatile INternet, INcome,INdonesia,INdiana etc etc.

Very blinkered thinking to go down the "India First" route. That should only apply to .co.in.

Exactly. .IN has a high branding potential, it could stand for INternet and INformation (even as a great and shorter substitute for .info), among the others. The only thing that .IN lacks is a great team of brand promoters like that of COInternet.

Are you serious? That is straight up Namepros logic right there...

So, you sincerely believe that .ws "means website"?
Or that .vc means "virtual community"?

C'mon... "Repurposing" a ccTLD never, ever takes in the minds of the public (and it has been tried on numerous occasions), which is a large part of the reason there are any number of ccTLDs that line up with US State abbreviations (.md, .mn, .la, etc, etc), yet go totally unused in that capacity.

It's hilarious to me that you guys "don't get" why .co has a bit of traction as a repurposed TLD, while doing so with ".in" is an entirely different thing... But hey! Maybe .ws really does mean website!

@Dman

Nobody was aware of .CO until July 2010, now you have it advertised on TV with commercials like Overstock's and GoDaddy's (during SuperBowl). Not to mention all the other huge companies like Twitter and Amazon acquiring and making use of dotCO. That's all free promotion for the extension.

I'm not saying dotIN should follow the same path, because, unlike dotCO, it already has a huge potential with its national userbase. I'm just saying a promotional campaign from the Registry wouldn't hurt it.

Re: Complete List of Indian Domain Name Sales

There are a small handful of TLDs that have intuitive 'rebranding' potential.

.tv is one for use with TV interests, .co is kinda-sorta one, but again... Step away from the total failure that is "Namepros Logic" and you'll soon realize that .co's future as a repurposed TLD is still a very questionable thing. Use by Overstock does not a TLD make. The letters "IN" do not have anywhere near the same marketing gravity as ".Co" or ".TV". Trying to make that comparison is ridiculous.

The whole "THE REGISTRY IS NOT PROMOTING THE TLD ENOUGH!" is the standard cry of many domainers who invest in failed or under-adopted TLDs, but lets not contaminate the .in namespace with that lame argument.

.in is credible- in India.
.in will continue to grow- in India.
.in is very meaningful- to India.

Ergo my entire point- with .in domains, think "India first"... or, keep using failed strategies and buy keywords irrelevant to India in the .in namespace and I'll buy up the other ones ;)

TLDs grow on adoption, marketing and use by actual operating businesses, not 'domain registry promotion' or anything domainers will ever influence.

Interesting enough discussion to merit its own thread, so I've broken it off from the thread it was in.

Re: Complete List of Indian Domain Name Sales

.IN lends itself more to 'refashioned' usage than .CO and maybe even .TV in certain aspects like domain hacks etc.

Other extensions which also follow 'refashioned' usage are .me .to .us etc, and if you notice the similarity - all are English prepositions / words.

While I agree development is the way forward, there is a LOT of international development using .IN domains, something you can't ignore.

Perhaps I should bow to your infinitely superior knowledge of domaining and .in in particular.

I have very little idea what I am talking about so I will look to you for guidance in the future. Yes, we just don't get it.

poet, dman have you read the thread about geo targeting?
If you want to re brand .in go and petition the Indian government officials who made the rules for .in
It's all corrupt in India right, well grease some palms!

1. Change the geo targeting so it is an INternational domain of the INternet.
2. Privacy.

Then guys we will all be rich! because then it could be re branded. Are .ca or .us domains valuable domains? Nup. same problem can not change the geotargeting.

Until those two things are change guys, the only rebrand .in will see is:
I'll Never Reg It Again - .in

If you think that .in has 'repurposing potential', then there's a large aspect of this that you 'don't get'.

This is why you could not articulate a factual counter-point. Because the whole idea of 'repurposing' .in isridiculius and there isn't a credible, logical position in support of that.

Domain hacks? Again... This is the sort of crap you read on places like Namepros, where 99% of the membership base loses money every year to Bob Parsons.
