I'm curious how many .in and .co.in domainers you think there are...

It's very hard to tell, but from doing a lot of whois lookups over the years, I get the impression there are about 500 or so people who are actively investing in .in and .co.in domains.

Good Question Jeff!
I have also asked the same question many times.

I think 500 is a good estimation.

;)

I am a domain investor from India , when i talk about domain investment most of my friends and family members thinking I am crazy and wasting my money and time in domain investment.....not many Indians like this , i am really surprised to see 500+ serious investors... that's a very good number indeed. lets hope my effort will pay back in the next 2 to 3 years... :)

cheers

It would be interesting to know.
If I am asked, I would also say that a figure of 500 will be on a higher side.
I would peg it at a lower figure...say 300.

I fully agree with you domainpunti as i am from India too

seriously .. do you think .IN will make a big impact in the next few years ? I mean it must be around under 5 years .. because since .IN/.co.in were born in 2005 .

i think .in will make a big impact in next 10 years for sure... are you ready to hold that long? being optimistic is always good but being realistic is too gud... As i am doing this for last 4 years i moved from optimistic to realistic....

I believe the .in usage will increase slowly for next 2 to 4 years probably the usage will go for exponential growth.

A different topic from above, Indian's generally dont consider risky investments in general , but if few domainers from India prove domain investment is good option to earn , rest of the people will move into the path...also the imitating will happen so quickly with in a year thousands of domain investors emerge. its the same mind set applicable for domain usage too.

cheers

Yes i believe .IN will have a big impact in the next few years. Few things to note:

1..IN will not get any less competitive from here going forward.
2. India's internet population will at least triple in 5 years. How can we imagine there won't be an uptick in demand for domain names?.IN will get its fair slice because everyone is nationalistic.
3.If you don't own the right types of names that will be in demand in the near future, you probably should worry if you intend on holding those names for several years because they are way less likely to find a home with an end user.
4.The longer you wait, the better the $$$$.Watch the price you sell your premium .in names because in a few years, you will no doubt have regrets if you're selling today for too low a price.
5.Traffic and PPC will increase, but PPC might be slower and not as big.
I am trying to hold my .ins for at least 3 years. 67% of my domain portfolio consists of .IN domains and i consider .in the domain penny stock ...sort of.I am attracted to the Cheap prices, a bearish market, and good potential for high ROI on sales.

Such as a big country like India, personally I hope .IN & .co.in will do well in the next few years . There are some great sale recently which is really good I think.

Indian peoples adpot technology very fast , Two examples : 1. Cable television reached almost every house and 2. when mobile phones was launched on 15th August, 2005 , media and others never thought of this kind of growth for mobile phones. Today when we go to remote villages, we can see that even the shepherd uses mobile and transfers the songs on bluetooth, that is the way Indians adopt technology.

As a registrar we see lot of peoples are registering and using domain names (particularly .IN) even in very small villages so we thought future is very bright but it will still take approx three to four years.

According to us growth of domain names in India is mainly depend on two factors :

1. Reach of low cost internet connections to more and more peoples and houses. Like cable tv.

2. Young generation particularly who are student of middle schools will come to colleges in few years and then you will see a great change in internet space as this generation is fully computer educated.

So within next four to five years you will see amazing growth.

I hold approx 100 .in since 2005, would u consider me a serious domainer? though i didnt hold any .coms other then my own developed websites.

100 is a decent number. if you believe in domains and investing in the same then you are a domain investor.

I think there is nothing like Serious / Non Serious, who ever is putting money and time in domain investment in the belief of getting good returns better than the traditional business is a domain investor.

second point , the number doesnt matter . the quality matters. for example the guy who bought insurance.com 20 years before might be far superior investor than the guy who bought 1000 non business domains at the same time. there are many other factors too we need to consider ...

alina,

might be you are a passive domainer

cheers
