Releasing an app?

Is it worth coding and releasing an App to go with your website to drive traffic? I did consider it, but even with the AppMakers out there it looks like a lot of work, and the custom builders are not cheap.

I didn't bother. There are loads of wordpress plugins to turn sites into apps, so its something I could do quickly if I wanted, but I like people going straight to my site.

The big problem is that the app will constantly need updating and you never know when your version will fall out of favor with the latest android or iphone update. It's just a lot to keep up with. And the second the app no longer works, it will increase the fussing among your market.

Update: I've been reading other threads and just noticed you know how to code. That is a big benefit and truly impressive! If you know how to keep an app going after it's been created then why not go for it?

If you know how to code, it shouldn't be a big problem but that would also call for more devotion of time to ensure that the app is always updated. As for me, I always prefer visitors directly accessing my website.

I would create the app if I had the talent. More and more people are accessing the internet with their smartphone. An app will allow you to reach that audience. It can also extend your professional network and build your reputation in the community too. I say go for it.

True but again, you have to ensure that whatever traffic you are getting through the apps is worth it. I am more concerned about an app that is functional and updates easily so as to act as a complementary to the website.

It is true that designing an app actually requires talent and not everyone can do this. All the same, even when deciding to build an app, I agree that there should be the capacity to do stuff like updating the app.

You should look at your demographic. If they use mobile phones, an app is worth the price it takes to make it. If they are, by and large, homebodies, I wouldn't bother.

I concur with you @Connected. It would be a waste of resources to release an app if the majority of the users don't use mobile phones.
