I actually think that this is a great way of ensuring that you reach out to new customers or clients. Giving them the choice of signing up and exercising their free will means that any sort of email campaigns will be more effective since you’ll be targeting a pool of people that are interested in your product/service. Your thoughts?

I agree, if they sign up for your email list, they are saying send them your news, coupons and/or best deals. They are already interested customers waiting for your promotions. Do you think emails should be on a schedule basis or just when you have something interesting to sell or news to distribute? My problem has been that I wanted emails to go out once a week. Finding interesting news or articles for once a week has been tough but I don't think once a month is enough to keep the customers interested.

I would say both. If you are only sending the emails when there's something to sell, this may send the wrong signal about you only being interested in their money. It is never easy to come up with interesting stuff on a weekly basis but I believe that with time, we all get used to it.

JackD., why not give the customer the option to select which newsletter themes they'd like to receive. Your customer could check the boxes to receive newsletters for sales/promos, new products, back in stock (for popular items), customer questions, designer highlights, or anything else that works for your business. Lots of companies do that and it seems more efficient than sending a generic newsletter once a week.

Giving the customer the ability to choose is very much on point and it works very effectively. In essence, I think you can have both. There's a famous internet marketer who is fond of sending very informative newsletters/bulletins that are always relevant to the goings-on in the industry.

The way I handle this is that I connected my blog to my email management and set up an email to go out to my list every time I post a blog article. I offered this as a benefit to my subscription and it gets my blog and messages out to my email list.
