Doing your own SEO

Hey guys, I've seen people say that anyone can handle doing SEO marketing on their own. Do you think that's true and if so, what are your tips?

It is very possible to kick-start your own SEO campaign. All the same, this may sound confusing and demanding to an entrepreneur that is starting out. Having said this, it is important to come up with the best approach that postions a website above the rest in terms of rankings.

Dibon, yes, it is definitely confusing. I know a lot about marketing, except for SEO. I want to try to do it myself, but I'm not sure if I possess the skills.

It all depends on your level of expertise and/or the amount of time you can spare for this. SEO and marketing are both time consuming and even if you have the know-how and lack the time, it is always best to hire someone to help.

Doing your own SEO can work but it very time consuming. Start by writing down your keywords that you want to be found with then through out all of the "general" keywords (too much competition for general keywords - you are going against major sites that have lots of money to spend on SEO and advertising). Refine your keyword list again and again. Then do a Google search for the keywords you settled on. Now study in depth each website that listed on the first page of results. When I say study, I do not mean spending 10 minutes looking over the site, I mean break it down to placement, frequency and uses for the keywords you are interested. Then compare the results of those 10 websites and you will have a good starting place for building your website. Also remember, the target is a moving target. Keep good records of traffic, what is working and what is not, keep good archives of what you started with, when and where you changed it (so as not to start over or duplicate what you have already tried by mistake). A lot of work!

Dibon, true, it is better to hire someone if you aren't exactly good at SEO. However, it saves you money if you learn to do it yourself.
