Which kind of earnings I can get from parking domain?

Almost without exception, the best way to get money from a domain name that you've registered through any registrar is NOT to park it. My personal opinion is that parking a domain is throwing potential revenue away. Unless your keywords and domain name are out of this world, you probably won't make enough to even cover your annual registration fees. The exception is if you find a domain name that has a high pay-per-click value. That's more than I can cover here.

Instead, develop a small website (usually referred to as a mini-site) where you can control content, branding, advertisements or paid links -- and overall quality. A mini-site might be 3-5 pages long. Some advertisers (e.g., Google Adsense) do not permit one-page sites when using their ads. Read the T's & C's of the ad provider. You can also use the site to sell the domain name!

Develop expertise in using the Google Keyword Planner. (It has replaced what was called the Google Adwords Keyword Tool).

Back to your mini-site... The better the quality, the more traffic. The more traffic, the more Pay Per Click (PPC) revenue. Even limited traffic can provide substantial click-through revenue on rare keywords. Just make sure that the keywords are drawing at least 1,000 views a month.

Do as much as you can do by yourself, while recognizing your limitations. Be sure to write out your expectations/ requirements/ specs/ goals for the site. If you are not a web designer, either use a templating engine like WordPress, or purchase a web designer by the job.

Contract a graphic designer for a simple but professional logo. Buy some inexpensive stock photography. Use a content provider to write your text, incorporating 3-5 keywords for your page (check out TextBroker as example).

Hire an SEO specialist to ensure you get front-page search-engine traffic. Hire talent to do a welcome video.

You might spend as little as $200-$500 or as much as $8,000-$10,000 on such a site, but if you put some of your own elbow grease into it, your annual payback could be very good. If you have a domain that is worth $10, it may not pay to sink a fortune into it. But if the domain has a valuation of $10,000, sinking another $5-10,000 into a well-performing site could produce some nice ongoing revenue. Keep in mind that you're also increasing the domain name value at the same time you're improving your PPC revenue.

There are a bunch of micro-production sites where you can have folks bid on your job. The most well known of these is fiverr . com, where you can get a variety of services at a price that you specify. Once you find a great contractor, don't let them go. Keep them busy!

Hung, my little company can also provide these services. Don't hesitate to contact me for a free quote. I'll try to point you in the right direction if it's something that we can't do with excellence. Good luck!

If I have a site valued at $10,000, then sinking the same amount, or even half, of that valuation into upkeep, maintenance and upgrades would be, to me, a fortune.

I use the same financial rules of thumb as a home owner does when it comes to upgrading costs. This does not constitute dumping 100% of the value into it to make it better, because that "equity" will not translate 100% into a rise in value. It doesn't work that way. Homes, like websites, have comparables. It doesn't matter, to a point, how much money you put into upgrades because the comparables with keep new values within the industry standard for a site such as the one you have.

A website is a product in this case, and all products when dealt with in this way have certain financial models they are bound to.

Very well explained, guys. Thanks for that. I sometimes wonder if parking might be the best option for me, but after reading your posts, I have made up my mind that it's not going to do.

Parking (to me) has always been a 50-50 affair that requires a lot careful strategizing and planning. I have never given much thought to parking a domain and thanks to you, I now have a clearer view of what's involved. Very resourceful indeed!

I was under the impression that parking domains can provide a good revenue for you. Am I mistaken in this thought? Anyhow, thanks for that detailed post. It's really very informative.

From my experience, no, parking a domain gets much less revenue than sticking a single-page site on it. It doesn't have to cost thousands: just get some free webspace, put Ads and an article on it, and point the domain name at it. The income is low, but better than Sedo produced for me, and it cost virtually nothing.

Good point

You know how companies pay people to put ads on their cars? Some of these companies pay the car owner based on how many miles they drive, when they drive, where they drive....etc.Basically, by how many people are projected to see it based on the movements. Look at a website or domain name the same way. It's a car. The more it is seen, the more it can make from adsense and the like. Park you car in a parking garage and the only people who will see it are the people who go into it. Which isn't that many.

I personally think that it's safe to use the website development option. Once developed, the value for the domain goes higher. And then one can sell it. Parked pages don't earn much. And for this you have to push such domains on some hosting. And the ask the users to interact on such site. That way the value of the site will be lot higher.
