Here is a list of newly funded startups and the domain names that they are using.
The most popular domain names among these startups is no doubt, .COM.
After the .COMs, they do seem to prefer .CO.
Other than that, .IO is a popular domain extension with the startups as well. Although .IO stands for Indian Ocean, people use it as internet.
Some of the startups prefer the ccTLD for their business, trying to target the local customers instead of the international ones.

.io is overrated and in a bubble. How does .io mean "internet"??
And some people think that since startups are actively using .io that means that .io in general is a booming extension?i disagree.

But am happy to see some .ins there :)

I don't know but people are considering it that way!
That is the reason internet based startups are preferring .io
I too disagree with it!

Yes... good to see .INs in the list. And they are funded too! :)

Well you comp sci engineers should correct me if i'm wrong but i think I/O has an ON/OFF meaning in computer engineering or something so i think thats what anchoring the branding.

I've seen some recent keyword.IO on flippa and the sales prices ain't been good news! So its experiencing niche demand, not general demand.

Sign of a weak extensions? Good keywords sell for very low $xxx to end users, like .biz! 'Nuff said.

I/O also has Input Output interpretation also attached to it.
People are interpreting it in different way, as in, Internet, Input/Output etc and going after it.
Totally agree with you Sir!
temporary and weak extension!

Well guess what? i was browsing Sedo's general auction now and we currently have what i just said about weak .ios on auctions and signs of a strong ccTLD/emerging extension.

Just look at .io here. its an LL DOT extension but look at how low the intial bid was...but people are definintely crowd bidding on .ios too...domainer/IT startup peer pressure or something. here but thats a low price for a name that short .CO is commanding a respectable price for that keyword, and we'll be lucky if that .io name hits $5,000. And its an LL! how much would TA.IN sell for? :D.
