.IN is for India

I just read about Eastern Biotech's launch of paternitytestindia.in. While I realise PaternityTest.in is already registered (but unused), I'm surprised Eastern Biotec didn't choose PaternityTest.co.in instead. At the time of writing this post, this domain is still available for registration. :confused:

So, what would you have chosen: PaternityTestIndia.in or PaternityTest.co.in?

I would choose PaternitytestIndia.in,
because dot.in is the way to go.
In my mind many foreign Companies think .in is the Main-Domainextension
in India.
Many good keywords are available under .co.in, but nobody is interested!
Dot.in is definitly the Future for Companies and for the most Domainers!
I have no doubt!

Yes, I suppose many non indian people (including companies) think .in is the main indian TLD (and they are right! :))

@Thomas. Yes, .in seems to be the first choice for many people. I also prefer .in over .co.in as its shorter.

However, in my mind adding "India" to the end of a phrase seems redundant when using an Indian domain extension (as .in and .co.in already indicates India). Therefore, I would have chosen PaternityTest.co.in even though it's a .co.in extension. Also, it's shorter and easier to remember than a 3-word domain. The disadvantage is that you might lose some traffic to the .in.

Lots of food for thought here as, in this case, Eastern Biotec seems to you agree with your approach Thomas.

We still debate .IN or .CO.IN

Let me post what I know and What I see in India.

When .co.in launched as an official domain extension for INDIA. every one used it. hosted their official website on it and used and still using email accounts on their domains which ends with .co.in

Even Google Indian site is Google and NOT Google

Even if you visit Google it will redirect to Google

.CO.IN is very popular in India and Among Indians.
.IN is very popular among non-indians

.IN also stand for
* INternational
* INternet
* INcorporation
* INc

Hence .IN is darling of non-indians.

We have seen 100s of clients who insist on .CO.IN even when .IN is available. Even we tell them all plus and minus point. they listen carefully and say, we prefer .CO.IN

And .CO.IN is cheaper compare to .IN

It's clear that .co.in has a big meaning to Indian people. I think they are so familiar with .co.in domains that many of them probably perceive .in as a gTLD (which is how .in is perceived by the rest of the world).

As the LLL.extension goes, so goes the extension in general.

Valuable extensions:
.com=LLL.coms are very valuable
.net- LLL.nets are also very valuable
.org-LLL.org is very valuable
.info-LLL.info is valuable too
.in-LLL.in is almost bought out, and for good combinations, its already bought out.
.co.in- many good LLL.co.ins are still available. why???? This shows .co.in has not reached a solid threshhold yet.

Honestly,i was more in favor of .co.in over .in a bit more than a year ago, but when i saw the competition for solid .ins, i knew thats were the "market" is. This is not to say .co.in is not valuable, BUT, .in will keep gaining on .co.in from now on, and we're just in the beginning phases, so which side do you want to end up on in the long run?

.co.in extensions are flaunted and used by yahoo and google.... yahoo email id for indians has been whatever@yahoo.co.in since ages and has added to a massive education of the cctld and thus co.in known among audiences.

.in is known mostly to domainers and international co's.

If you want to sell the domain to a end user frm india / indian company.. co.in is the way to go :p

I will prefer .in than .co.in ..... Yahoo and Google are launched many years back , that time .co.in is extension available. Now they cant change the same immediately as most of the indian internet users are not much familiar with domains.

I feel comparing with google / yahoo is not a good idea.. yahoo and google are for sure afraid of user change management....

For sure next few years , google and yahoo will change their domain extensions...

so i prefer buying PaternityTestIndia.in

cheers

Here's what another company decided to do:

Makro Group recently launched an India jobsite for healthcare and pharma (Makro has a number of offices worldwide).

They registered the .com, the .in and the .co.in. However, here's what they did with these domains:

- HarNeedi.com – active website, and is the domain they used in their press release.
- HarNeedi.in – active website, but it is simply a duplicate of the .com website.
- HarNeedi.co.in – they left this as a parked domain :eek:

Thanks Ceres for sharing , many more testimonials follow in next couple of months.... by next financial year starting .in will clearly emerge as the leader of indian domains. every one has to accept by that time, its just my gues looking into the usage of the same in india...

visit csrglobal.in it is also one of the testimonial...csrglobal.co.in is not yet registered....guys check whether they have a trademark on the same before registering , i will prefer not to register as it is against the infringement of the company act...

cheers

nothing unprofessional :rolleyes: its just default parking of a registrar/hosting name servers

companies always have its not my job sys admins :p
What I find unprofessional is the fact they left the domain parked, without changing the default nameservers, showing they don't care much about the domain.

Another case study... ;)

Last year, when AOL launched the India version of its men's lifestyle website, it registered Asylum.in but it did not register Asylum.co.in.

BTW, I note that AOL.co.in forwards to AOL.in.

visit orkut .in ;)

Last year, Google won Orkut.in in an INDRP case (that's not a surprise). However, I'm surprised Google has left it parked all this time.

As already mentioned above, Google's history of using .co.in for its Indian websites stems from the fact that .in was not available when it first started marketing in India.

To make the argument: Since google and yahoo use .co.in over .in, .co.in is dominant/more important than .in. Thats a fallacy. The internet is much more than google and yahoo, even combined, so just because they do something doesn't mean thats what the general true trend is. it does say something about their choice of preference, but its not good enough evidence to prove that .co.in is dominating .in.

just because they do something doesn't mean thats what the general true trend is
You're right! Google and Yahoo's .co.in TLD is only due to legacy reasons. And .in has much more value than .co.in (among non indian), regardless of what big companies decide.
