India: Real Estate or Property?

I saw today that BuyRealEstate.in sold for $1 on Bido auction. It got me wondering whether or not the term 'real estate' is used a lot in India. In the UK, they don't say 'real estate' which makes me wonder about India.

Is 'real estate' an American term that India is starting to adopt, or has 'real estate' always been used in India? Can anyone enlighten me?

Real Estate and Property are widely spoken words and business establishments in India.

There are 1000s of private limited companies in India, which either has Real Estate & Property in their company names.

Example:
Santosh Real Estate Pvt. Ltd.
India Property Pvt. Ltd.
Sameer Real Estate Housing Limited
etc. etc.

Here in India, out of 1.1 Billion People, only 5% of Indian population are net savvy. At current scenario, All Educated Indians (even school going English Medium kids) are well aware of Internet and have internet connection in their home/office and in MOBILE PHONES. The thing is they are unaware of Domaining or Domain Name Value.

They know YAHOO and GOOGLE
but they don't know what Yahoo and Google is worth of.

ebiz4india, thanks for the clarifying this. I see now there are both 'real estate agents' and 'property dealers' in India.

However, Google Adwords Keyword Tool indicates that not many people in India use the term 'buy real estate.' Instead, terms like 'buy apartment,' 'buy property' and 'buy house' are more popular (although some people do search for 'real estate agents' and 'property dealers').

Is the above correct?

Oh, and thanks for letting me pick your brains. ;)

Thanks ebiz4india - that's something I've always wondered. I've generally shied away from real estate domains because of this lack of knowledge.

Real estate terms in India

MOD EDIT: Merged post with related thread.
----

Hi, sorry if this has been asked before, but a search did not reveal anything.

I was wondering what words Indians prefer to use when it comes to their habitat? What is more common among "real estate", "property", "home" and "house"?

I guess they use all of them, but is "house" used more than "home", for example?

Thanks

Hi Euroflash,

I'm still a little confused about this topic. Can anyone provide more information about property-related terms in India so that we can all learn? ;)

Property is called Sampatti in Hindi , main Indian language. I have :--

PropertyDealer.in
RealEstateDealer.in
RealEstateDealers.in
Sampatti.in

Out of these PropertyDealer.in has received maximum enquiries/offers. Based on my experience I would say that Property Dealer is the term used in India more than Real Estate Dealer/Agent.

Actually, the equivalent of an apartment in India is a "flat". If you notice flats.in/co.in have been regged since 2005. Also regged is flatsforsale.in albeit since 2007.

In major cities, people mostly live in flats rather than houses unlike in North America.

URLtrader, thanks for the info. Taking into account Britain's past influence in India, I'm surprised the term "estate agents" isn't used - or do they say that as well in India?

Thanks Ace! This makes sense to me as they also say "flats" in Britain.
