.In Vs .CO.IN

IT.com
There's nothing like the simplicity of the .in.

Im sure there is a post about this, but I would love to get a list of words ending in .in... napk.in, virg.in, as I think out loud, i Google it and voila...

List words ending with in

wonder how many of these are taken... do you guys see any value to these. I let one of my domains go and see that someone has picked it up - mannequ.in

.in obviously has more selling power than .co.in. THis is not to say .co.ins are not valuable, but i would only bother with the best .co.ins you can find or buy. I still think price will help .co.in stablize, because its still cheaper than a .in, and that will make some Indians(and other indian internet investors) buy the .co.in over the .in. Look at the LLL situation. All the best LLL.ins are gone, but thats probably not the case for .co.in. Any extension that has a good/profitable LLL market, is a competitive extension. LLL.ins are literally the cheapest and MOST liquid domain assets out there right now. Many LLL.co.ins do get traffic, but the sales to end users and resellers has been lukewarm at best. I think .in is a more profitable extension than .co.in...generally.

indy - I hadn't known about that website - that's pretty cool!

I'm generally not a fan of hacks, but I think some domainers do well with them.

Indy,

Thanks for sharing this.

I think there are few words people who can remember domain name in parts like aspir.in, instead they might type in aspirin.in, or .com or even just google it. Marketing could make the difference but how many can be successful? Just a thought.

Yes..it seems to work for some domains..infact quite a lot of ccTLD domain sales happen if their letters form the 2 ending letters of a lot of dictionary words.. .IN, .ME, .IT etc are some examples..

Very useful information - thanks everyone for sharing their opinion!

I initially started investing heavily in the .co.in market and found some great type-in traffic names. That being said almost 90% of my purchases now are .in since I really think these are gaining momentum much quicker.

I have just crossed the $200K barrier in .co.in/.in sales , 95% of which were .co.in-taken 4 years though but a reasonable stat and I had/have a fairly good portfolio.

There is a growing market for both, .in widely accepted outside India .co.in more of a local flavour.

.in has the advantage of being shorter, can be India, Indonesia, Indiana and more importantly Internet.

.co.in traffic, certainly in my portfolio, is still way higher than .in.

Me- I like them both- in particular the ones that sell

Wow! That is great to hear and very inspiring. Do you mind if I ask where you've been most successful at finding buyers for your names? I have some very strong one-word generic domains and still trying to find where to best find buyers that know the true value of these names.

Thanks in advance!

A combination of forums, end user contacts, reseller contacts, bulk sales, you name it- all the accepted ways to produce sales.

I have a couple of sites but mainly in to buying and selling- more the latter than the former as "good' names hard to come by.

Away from ascii & India I am moving heavily in to idn.cn/idn.com (China) which hopefully will produce an even better result :p

Great - good to know. I own a company that does domain brokerage but am yet to find buyers that understand the real value of .in and .co.in domains.

You may be doing it already but create a presentation, power point etc, that illustrates the benefits of a relevant domain name- like everything, buyers need to know they need something and have to be sold to that need accordingly.

In my younger days, much younger, I sold showers, double glazing etc to people who did not know they needed them until I knocked on their door.

Same concept applies.

.in means targeting end users
.co.in means targeting corporate users.

.in will always have higher value compare to .co.in.

.in is good ----------> if you're looking to sell the domain name
.co.in -----> very good for SEO...

and lots of big sites use .co.in (google.co.in, orkut.co.in, bsnl.co.in, irctc.co.in etc etc )

The main difference is that .IN can be used for international purposes and have a worldwide scope, while .CO.IN is perceived as Indian people's very own and national extension. I like to say that IN is a little "less ccTLD" than .CO.IN.

personally I like .IN much more since it can be use in a lot of meaning. Like the_poet mentioned, this could use as "International" domain. I got couple of end-user who bought my domain .IN just for use as "International" represent for their biz.

Both .in and .co.in are ccTLD (Country Specific Top Level Domain) from India.

Within .co.in the term .co is the abbreviation for "commercial". This shows that the .co.in domain is especially suitable for tradesmen and other commercial entities related to India.

Whereas .in is good enough for other business, entities or individuals who belong to India.

Anyway, .in sounds good enough and gives nice identity to a Website Address.

honestly i feel .In is the king , .co.in lost its ground totally. I will strongly suggest dont think about .co.in until unless its high value business specific domain.

.in will dominate in next 3 years , i am seeing the same trend from last 2 years...many of my friends with small businesses they are preferring to have a website with .in

cheers

i agee with you!

Honestly, i have noticed 2 key things that some people investing in .in domains sometimes dont' accept:

1) OFFCOURSE .in is dominating .co.in. Do you guys look at the sales threads and see the frequency and prices?

2) shorter IS good when you buy any domains in any extension. if you don't think lll.ins will do well in the future, i advise you to quit investing in .in domains. actually quit domaining because that is a cardinal rule of domaining that if you can't understand, the odds are not in your favor.

When we discuss .IN vs .CO.IN or lll versus 1 word or 1 worder VS 2 worder its not a question of challenging people's choices. We can all reg and buy whatever we want. the big question is : which of these categories will consistently outdo the other, sell more consistently and finally for better prices down the road? that is the question. Because citibank uses citi.co.in for their website doesn't mean you owning mostly/only .co.ins is the right thing or the winning move. Buy names you have observed to consistently win. they aren't even guaranteed to win really! BUT, the point is that domaining is about means justifying the end. Buy the best names you can now and the odds will be in your favor and hopefully good sales will come to you.i own 160+ lll.ins and you know what? sooner or later "good luck" will come to me because i know i have invested in a winning category. have you?

Hi Warbux,

Well said.

take my case, I am holding 350 + lll.in and 10+ NNN.in and at the same time I am holding a decent number of .co.ins too.

most of the enquiries I am getting for the past 2 years and the sales I did are honestly lll.ins and key word .in domains. the ratio of the statistics are clearly in the favour of .ins. the interest of the end user sentiment of .co.in is decreased. this is my personal feeling , might be few of my fellow domainers may not agree with me. Lets hope for the best of all domainers...

cheers
