Have you registered your name?

I'm curious to learn if INForum members have registered the domain for their own name. Many fail to do this, even high profile billionaires and businessmen. There are those who will take advantage of this omission.

Before I even knew about domaining, my domainer hubby registered his name, my name and my son's name.

I assume wherever you live in the world, you should always try and grab the .COM plus the ccTLD reserved for your country. So if you live in India try and get the .COM and .IN. Do you agree?

So what about you? Have you registered your name?

Some people register it for business reasons, personal reasons, vanity reasons etc. Here are some examples:

(1) If you run your own business or you are a professional, then potential customers or employers might search for you on the web. If you own the domain of your personal name, then it can help you with personal branding, and protect you from those who try to register/use the domain name to hurt your reputation.

(2) If you have a common name like John Smith, then wouldn't you want to own JohnSmith.com rather than another John Smith owning it? There will only ever be one JohnSmith.com.

(3) You can run your own personal website from such a domain.

(4) Perhaps years from now your son or daughter might even say 'thank you' to you for registering his/her name. They might actually want to use the domain name for whatever purpose suits them.

Can anyone else think of other reasons why it's beneficial to register your name and those of your family?

I don't think its much useful. Unless you are an expert guru of management or yoga or something similar, people generally don't pay a damn to personal domains. Say Chetanbhagat.com could be worth huge reputation and money too but rameshsharma.com is nothing more than useless.

At the very least, it's a good defensive move. You don't want someone registering your name as a domain and then putting a hate site up.

Hi indona, if someone used RameshSharma.com to set up a website to hurt his reputation, then I think Ramesh Sharma himself would care (whether he's as famous as Chetan Bhagat or not). Also, if professionals or friends come across such a hurtful website, I don't believe every single one of them will just ignore the website.

That was my rationale as well.

I have my name as well and my wife's and our two children's names in .com as well as a few other select tlds.

I haven’t done t yet but I am thinking of doing it once my affiliate site is already making money. I will turn it to an MMO site which will talk about my experience on earning online.

hmm..I too have mine..however, I think its better to get yours now than to wait..who knows, maybe one day ramesh sharma will be as big as chetan bhagat..or may be bigger..never rule out the possibilities my friend..
