why directories ?

i really don't understand why there are so many directories.

coz, no one goes to directory to find a site(everybody uses google or ..)
is that because Search engines give a little importance if we linked to many sites or is there any good reason for it?

Directory is mainly used for SEO purposes, peoples started directories and accept links once they got traffic they publish Ads and earn revenues.

it may be good to get the search engines to more frequently index your site, but it is useless in terms of an off-page seo practice. links from directories are virtually worthless, even the best directories. these are not counted as 'quality' links which is very important to have any effect on rankings

You need to understand difference between search engine and directories. People make a container that keep different category sites and search engine crawler find all data over internet. Few directory are great like Dmoz
