I think any custom developed site can leverage to avoid a lengthy sign-up process. I have had such sections developed before and it is a waste of time and money as many people do not want to create a new user-id and they just prefer to view sections available for free without sign-up.

People do not want to sign-up for a few reasons:
1. Do not want to share one's email-id unless particular benefit is seen (and don't want spam/ promotion emails)

2. Do not want to remember another set of user-id and password

3. Tired of filling sign-up forms.

So, using a open-id concept for sign-up encourages people to join the site without having to register and remember passwords. As RPXNow.com supports up to 6 providers for FREE albeit with limited functionality, the minimum sign-up process is covered and that is very tempting to use.

I am planning to use it on my new website - to be announced shortly.
