I get the premise on how to search for users, and see I can email them asking them to add me as a friend but is there a direct way to send linked in friend requests to people with similar interests ?

the only direct way apart from invitations at individual level is to send Inmail ( which is paid service) and not worth it for the solution your are seeking.
