Why avoid hand reg?

I keep seeing here that some domainers no longer hand reg their domains. What is the strategy behind that? Do you prefer to use a bot? Do you strictly buy on the after-market? I figured there must be something I'm missing.

The only thing I see is that there are so many "domainers" now and the competition is fierce for the really good domains. Not many go unregistered for more than 5 minutes so if you want to hand reg a really good domain, you have to be fast! Very hard to do. So a lot of domainers have given up hand regging and just pay the fees.
