I know that a lot of companies, usually the bigger ones have in house lawyers. Do you think that this is better than hiring a lawyer whenever you need?

Most large corporations have inhouse lawyers that they consult with on a regular basis especially in the areas of trademark and copyright, labor relations and liability. Whether it's better depends on how often you think you will need legal advice for your business. It might be better just to have a lawyer on a monthly retainer so they are available when you need one.

Very true @JackD and the argument has always been that you actually don't need inhouse lawyers if you don't use their services often. In such a case, it is much cheaper to consult them on a need-to-need basis.

Isn't expensive to have in house lawyers as compared to those that you have on call? I would think that if you go with the former, they you have to maintain them on payroll. All the same, this would depend on the nature of business.

There's some great points and information shared above. I agree that having lawyers to consult with on a daily basis is a great benefit, especially fro the bigger business.

Either way (and whichever option a business chooses) the most important thing is ensuring that you've settled on a lawyer or legal entity that's reputable and forthright. A lot of businesses find legal advice from all the wrong places and this could hurt profitability.
