Identifying secure websites

It has always been said that if a website's URL begins with "https"and not "http", then it means that it is being secured using an SSL certificate. Is this the most important way to check and if not so, what are the other indicators? I would guess that sharing your personal information with a fake website would be a great compromise to online security,

I have always used that as a way of seeing if websites are secure or not, especially when I'm using my credit cards to pay for something. Is there another way to do it or is that the only way, I wonder?

Cyber criminals are always looking at personal as a way to easily mint dollars so it is very important for people to be careful when sharing this information online. For me, checking for the physical address and contact number is normally a good way of ensuring that the company is real.

All https means is that that site has an SSL or TLS certificate. Since Phishing websites can register these and be secure, checking the https extension is only one part of it. Really important: make sure the domain matches the certificate! Many browsers now will throw an alert if it doesn't, and if there are errors then don't proceed.

Go to the website of any major banking institution......Chase, B of A, etc......and look at their URL. It will always start with HTTPS, there will be a little lock icon beside that and it will be highlighted in green.

Whenever I hear people talk about banks, I am reminded of one hacker who managed to get access to a bank's security system. Overall, I think cyber crime is real and always well-planned.

The one hacker? There have been a few more than that! It's not just the 2016 Bangladesh one or the 2014 Global one, it goes back for years, like Citibank in 1994. I worked with PCI DSS for a while, and it is terrifying how insecure some systems are.

Wouldn't you just love to be a grey hat these days? Think of the money they make hacking into the system that a black hatter uses to get into banks or government servers. You could retire in 5 years.

It is actually interesting that hacking is real and it is no wonder even directors have incorporated it in movie scenes. I agree that the amount of money hackers get is a lot but just out curiousity, isn't there a danger of getting jailed?
