KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Digital India' initiative could get a tad more expensive for the government as the National Optic Fibre Network (NOFN) project is likely to see a nearly 40% cost-overrun, up from the originalRs 20,100 crore estimate to nearlyRs 28,000 crore, a top telecom department (DoT) official toldET.

The NOFN will be the main highspeed internet backbone for delivering government services to the common man under the Digital India initiative from 2019. The Universal Services Obligation Fund, an independent DoT arm funding NOFN, will shortly move a Cabinet note, seeking approval for the cost escalation. "Inter-ministerial consultations on the draft Cabinet note for the proposed cost escalation are already underway," the official quoted above said.
