The Subtle Approach

Do you think subtleties are a good way to market your goods or services online? If so, how would you approach that method? A lower than average keyword placement ratio for example?

I think key-wording the headings is really vital. I feel that subheadings are a great way to sell but I am not sure of how to appropriately do this, without compromising the keyword placement ratio.

I'm not sure how you would market a site subtly. "If you build it they will come" doesn't really work with websites. I suppose you could get it mentioned on forums and try word of mouth, but that can get easily drowned out by a new craze. There's a reason people use up-front advertising, and it is because it works.

Ritchie is right that subheadings matter, particularly with keyword searches.

I personally find up-front advertising annoying and distracting. Most of what I find on the Internet is through Google searches, and to get noticed on search pages, a company isn't going to use heavy-handed tactics.

I agree with you Swisslist; up-front advertising can be annoying and distracting. I always wonder if marketing a site in this way works for some people and to what extent?

Some of the aggressive types of advertising can actually come across as annoying and offputting but the truth is that it works, and that is why people keep doing it. I especially hate those pop-up lightboxes that sprawl across the screen endlessly on some sites but I hear they are really effective for sign ups.

That might work for sign-ups, but will that translate to conversions? If all I do is sign up for something just to keep it off my screen, I'm probably bot going to buy anything.

I agree with Swisslist. I usually just leave a website that has those kind of annoying ads running across the screen while I'm trying to read something, but if I absolutely have to read the article on that blog, and the ads keep popping up multiple times, then I will just sign up with a bogus email just to get them off the page.
