Domain Extension Matters for SEO
There has been a lot of debate in the community about the importance of domain extension for SEO.
A lot of this started when .info websites went missing in Google for a day back in 2008.
More evidence today - Google removed all .co.cc websites from its results:
Google dumps all 11+ million .co.cc sites from its results • The Register
Google has removed over 11 million .co.cc websites from its search engine results pages on the basis that most of them are far too "spammy". The .co.cc space is not an officially authorised second-level domain like .co.uk or .com.au. Rather, it's offered independently by a Korean company (http://co.cc/) that just happens to own the domain name .co.cc.

Re: Domain Extension Matters for SEO
Yes, the extension matters, but for indirect reasons.Security is a big reason why. The indian govt has taken steps to make .IN a secure TLD and this will improve its long term success.

Re: Domain Extension Matters for SEO
Google banned co.tv and co.cc as most are used by spammers and malware distributors

Ya. They should be banned for their spamming actvities.
But few good ones will suffer too.

Re: Domain Extension Matters for SEO
All domains which are under .co.cc are just sub domains and they are not ICANN approved registrar and is some 3rd party service. When a product is FREE - it is the target of people making all nonsense. there is nothing wrong in blocking all sub-domains of them.
But the real domain extensions that are approved by ICANN and of registry of country does not impact on SEO part. we need to accept partly that search engine like Google give priority to country level domains and they perform well on that specific search performed in country. For example google.co.in and here all .in domain .co.in perform well but not same as here on other Country specific Google Search service.Last edited by HostASP; 09-03-2011 at 06:17 PM.

Re: Domain Extension Matters for SEO
banning .info domains are not FAIR for this reason. 100% there is nothing wrong in using .info domains for promotional activities. any business would need this, and i would say .info as registry should find solution for this or get this resolved with Google. It is totally unfair by Google.
