In a joint venture between Wal-Mart and Bharti Enterprise, a 'Wal-Mart store' is set to open next week in Amritsar, Punjab State. Although it won't be called Wal-Mart; it will be called BestPrice Modern Wholesale.

Bharti Wal-Mart is using a different name because they received opposition from the previous government's former leftist allies and activists. It can't be easy to rebrand from 'Wal-Mart' to 'BestPrice Modern Wholesale.'

Unfortunately, Indian consumers won't get to enjoy shopping at the Wal-Mart store as it is a wholesale operation (due to India's current foreign investment restrictions). Recently, there's been speculation that India might relax some of these restrictions.
